Grounding: 7 telltale signs that you need to do it now

No matter how much time we spend in the metaphysical or spiritual world, our bodies are still physically on the Earth.

What is grounding?

Grounding (also known as earthing) is the practice of balancing your spiritual and physical energies by connecting and anchoring with the Earth.

Who should practice grounding?

Grounding is important for every body, and many of of us do it on a daily basis without even thinking about it (being in nature for example).

However for people who do spiritual work or who are in the midst of a spiritual awakening it is especially important. Why? Because losing the sense of connection to the earth or the physical body can cause a whole heap of problems, read on.

I discovered first hand the importance of grounding when I was going through an intense period of spiritual awakening. All day every day I felt like I was disconnected from my body, and every night I felt there were unwanted spirits around me (they’d even visit in dreams).

I went to see a spiritual healer who told me I needed to ground myself. Her grounding prescription for me?

  • Wear red (as the colour red is associated with the base chakra which is the energy centre for grounding)
  • walk barefoot on grass and sand (as it makes your body feel its literal connection to the earth) and
  • use a mantra (words are powerful and have energetic value. See below for a couple of suggestions)

Did it work?

Absolutely, and it was soooo good to be able to sleep again without feeling there were a host of spirits screaming for my attention.

7 telltale signs that you need spiritual grounding now:

Signs that you are in need of spiritual grounding can include:

  • disassociating from the self
  • feeling like you’re floating (but not in a good way)
  • feeling dazed

  • lightheadedness and shaking
  • feeling like you can’t feel your body

The Benefits of Grounding

Grounding, particularly when done regularly, can make you:

  • feel connected to your environment in a more healthy way
  • feel more stable both emotionally and physically,
  • better able to focus (no more scattered energy)

7 Grounding techniques and tools you should try

TIP: Use more than one technique if you can and do them both regularly

  1. Go barefoot in sand, grass or soil. You can walk or merely stand there while focusing on meditative breathing.
  2. Meditate and visualise ‘tree’ roots coming out from your body and growing deeply into the earth beneath you.
  3. Mindfully eating wholefood and drinking water. The key words are mindfully and wholefood.
  4. Balancing your root chakra (see Four Chakra Balancing Methods I Swear By
  5. Using a mantra that resonates with you. Repeat it regularly and often. Doing so should help you feel centred as well as grounded. A couple of grounding mantra’s I’ve come up with are: “I Am grounded. I Am connected to Mother Earth and am safe and loved” and “I Am. I Am here. I Am here now”.
  6. Use grounding crystals such as black Obsidian, Red Jasper or Smoky Quartz.
  7. Put a few drops of frankincense, pine or sandalwood essential oils in an essential oil humidifier.

Grounding is a good habit to get into, particularly if you live away from a natural environment or are involved in spiritual work. It is the process of balancing the spirit and physical energies by anchoring the physical energy body to the Earth.
